Collapse Bisphosphonates and Monoclonal Antibodies: Understanding Their Impact on Implant Dentistry
As the population ages more implant-candidates are taking medications to either treat or prevent osteoporosis.  The medications most often used are Bisphosphonates (BPs) or the newer monoclonal antibodies (MAs).  Both classes of these medications affect normal bone turnover, and in doing so put the patient at risk for osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ).  This presentation will explain the mechanism of action of BPs and MAs and the connection to ONJ.  Pathological issues, complications, and treatment decisions that are of concern to the patient and clinician will be discussed.

Our presenter, James L. Rutkowski DMD, PhD, has lectured extensively on this topic.  Dr. Rutkowski’s presentation is clinically relevant.  He will provide an algorithm for deciding when a patient is at risk and if ONJ does occur how it can be managed.

As the prevalence of dental implants increases so does the incidence of implant complications.  Studies evaluating the frequency of implant related complications have found that the most common biologic complications include soft tissue abscess and fistula formation, gingival margin recession and papilla loss, and the development of mucositis and peri-implantitis.  This presentation will discuss the etiology and treatment of the most common biologic implant complications and more importantly how to avoid them.
